ไอดอล/แจ๊ส/Wynton Kelly!!??

วันนี้ผมไม่ได้จะมาพูดถึงไอดอลอย่างที่หลายๆคนรู้จักกัน (บีเอนเค....) แต่จะพูดถึงไอดอลเทพแจ๊สคนนึงที่เขามีศิษย์มากมายที่(เคย)พยายามจะเล่นให้เหมือนเขา ผมกำลังพูดถึงมือเปียโน Wynton Kelly ที่มีผลงาน sideman กับนักดนตรีแจ๊สมากมาย

โพสต์นี้เขียนอวย Wynton มากเพราะ Wynton Kelly เป็นหนึ่งในไอดอลของผมในการเล่นเปียโน

Chick Corea หรือ Wynton Kelly??

ก่อนอื่นสำหรับใครที่ไม่คุ้นเคยกับ Wynton Kelly ผมแนะนำให้ไปฟังเพลงที่เขาอัดไว้ก่อน

อันนี้ผมชอบ แล้วก็ นี่ สุดท้าย

อันสุดท้ายนี่ Wynton อัดไว้กับมือทรัมเป็ต Blue Mitchell ในปี 1959 

6 ปีต่อมาลองมาดูอัลบั้ม Things To Do ของ  Blue Mitchell (1965) แต่คราวนี้ Chick Corea เล่นเปียโนให้ (อัลบั้มนี้เป็นstudio albumแรกของ Chick Corea)

อัลบั้ม The Thing To Do นี่ผมชอบมากๆๆๆเพราะว่าเวลาฟัง Chick Corea เล่นเปียโนในอัลบั้มนี้ เขาเล่นได้มีกลิ่นอายสไตล์ Wynton Kelly มากๆ (แบบเป็นสไตล์ bebop เทรดิชั่นนอลมาก)

พอฟังอัลบั้มนี้แล้วมันทำให้ผมมีกำลังใจศึกษา Wynton และ tradition มากขึ้น มากขึ้นเพราะขนาดนักเปียโนระดับ Chick Corea ยังเคยเล่นในไสตล์ที่เป็น traditional มาก่อน

อีกคนหนึ่งที่เป็นไอดอลของผมคือ Brad Mehldau ส่วนมากเราจะรู้จัก Mehldau กับวงทรีโอของเขา แต่ว่าในช่วงยุค 90s Mehldau นั้นเคยมีผลงาน sideman ให้กับศิลปินมากมาย เรามาลองฟังMehldau สมัยหนุ่มๆกัน

  ส่วนตัวแล้วผมคิดว่า Mehldau มีความเป็น Wynton Kelly สูงมากในช่วงแรกเริ่มในอาชีพของเขา(สักยี่สิบต้น)

Mehldau เองเคยให้สัมภาษณ์กับ Jazztimes ไว้ในปี 98เกี่ยวกับ style และ developement ของเขา

Mehldau has certainly come a long way toward developing his own voice since his virginal tour in 1989 with alto saxophonist Christopher Holliday. “That was the first gig that I had where we went on the road. We went out for nine months and it was the first time that I was playing every night. And when I came off the road I remember musicians like [guitarist] Peter Bernstein and other musical peers saying, ‘It sounds like you found something that’s more you, sort of your own style.’ Because up until that point, the very broad two schools of influences were Wynton Kelly, sort of a hard bop approach that I just love and still do, and then more of a McCoy Tyner kind of thing.

“And I remember consciously thinking about it. I would think to myself when I was freelancing around New York, ‘Well, on this gig I did more of a McCoy thing and then on the next gig with Jimmy Cobb I did more of a Wynton Kelly thing. What’s going on here? Where am I in all this?’ And I think somehow after that gig with Chris Holliday I found a way of bringing those two things together and assimilating them and then starting to find myself in all of that.”

ผมว่าการศึกษาแรงบันดาลใจและไอดอลเขาศิลปินที่เราชื่นชอบนั้นมีประโยชน์กับเรามาก เพราะมันจะสอนเราถึงวิธีการคิดและที่มาที่ไปของศิลปินคนนั้นๆ
